Microsoft leaving Apple behind

Microsoft tablet PC with windows 8 known as surface. At an event here, the company showed off the device, which is about the same weight and thickness as an iPad, with a 10.6-inch screen. The tablet has a built-in "kickstand" that will allow users to prop it up for watching movies, and a thin detachable cover that will serve double duty as a keyboard.

"We want to give Windows 8 its own companion hardware innovations," Ballmer said.

One interesting element of the forthcoming tablet is that it will be one of the first non-Xbox devices to get Xbox Live streaming capabilities.

Don't get too excited though – this means only movies via the Zune service, rather than a fully-fledged suite showcasing the best Xbox has to offer.

It does help paint a better picture of what Microsoft is bringing to the table(t) here, given it has very little heritage in the hardware business… we'd imagine the music service will be involved too.

Interesting Feature

In fact, it seems like the company's Xbox smart glass plans are set to feature heavily here too - imagine streaming everything from your console onto a dedicated tablet?

Apple has a new challenge now against the rival Microsoft's Surface tablet. Microsoft said one version of the Surface tablet would come with 32 gigabytes or 64 gigabytes of storage and feature a type of chip called ARM that is commonly used in mobile devices. Steven Sinfosky, president of Microsoft's Windows division, said the price would be comparable to that of other tablets that use ARM chips.

Now the tablet geeks must check out the new Microsoft tablet to be launched around October so you have to wait for it.
